Why You Can't Afford Not To Have an Opt-In Mailing List

Do you have an opt-in mailing list yet? Are you collecting e-mail addresses from your visitors and customers, and using them to promote your business?

If not, you are missing out on a potentially lucrative method for increasing sales.

Despite all of the media coverage and discussion about spam, phishing, and other unwanted messages, e-mail is still a very important and powerful marketing tool for businesses.

A recent survey conducted by America Online, in partnership with Opinion Research Corporation, found that the average e-mail user checks their inbox almost five times every day. E-mail has become such an important part of our lives that, according to the survey, 26% can't even go more than two or three days without checking it.

With numbers like that, you can see why getting your business's message out there can be very beneficial. And what's even more exciting is that not only are people checking e-mail like crazy, they are still reading the messages and clicking through to web content, despite worries about spam.

E-mail marketing is still a viable medium for generating online sales. In fact, according to an eMarketer.com report, direct e-mail marketing had a higher return on investment in 2004 than other methods, except telemarketing.

So, how can you take advantage of e-mail marketing? What kind of content can you create to promote your business? Below are a couple ideas to get you started:

Newsletter: Send a bi-weekly or monthly newsletter covering articles and topics relevant to your business's industry.

If you sell maternity clothes, then create a newsletter about healthy pregnancy, the latest trends in maternity fashion, and maybe even images of famous moms-to-be.

Special Offers: Tell your subscribers about what they may be missing this week at your store.

Offer coupons, sale items, and other discounts to bring them back to your store.

New Product Arrivals: Show off your newest product lines and items. Be creative with your product descriptions and entice your readers to visit your store to learn more.

Event Invitations: Invite your customers to special events at your winery and give them a link to make a reservation online.
